Atlas Copco Sponsors Team at Punkin Chunkin 2011 World Championship

Atlas Copco is the official compressed air supplier for the Sky Buster team at the 2011 Punkin Chunkin World Championship taking place in Bridgeville, Delaware on November 4-6.

The World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association (WCPCA) is a trademark nonprofit that raises money for scholarships, as well as for organizations that benefit youth and the local community, including St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Each year, WCPCA volunteers host a signature pumpkin-launching event, fueling innovative engineering and science-based ideas that draw spectators from all over to see which team can develop a mechanism to fire their pumpkin the longest distance.
The Punkin Chunkin cultivates the odd, challenging and competitive quest for distance that inspires creativity, ingenuity, teamwork and passion. This dedication drives teams to compete using science and engineering skills and also brings spectators to the gate which enables the WCPCA to continue its support of scholarships and charitable programs.

In 2010, Bill Schnabel of Automation Air LLC, an authorized Atlas Copco distributor, started talking with the Sky Buster team about building a better pumpkin launcher. Applying his expertise in the field of pneumatics, Mr. Schnabel was able to assist the team in building a powerful air-powered cannon that would have greater firing range than anything done before. He worked with Atlas Copco which was pleased to provide a high powered, trailerable, industrial compressor on loan for the Sky Buster team.

The Atlas Copco XRVS 466 portable air compressor will provide compressed air to power the team’s air canon. The XRVS 466 delivers compressed air up to 956 cfm and is powered by a 6-cylinder Mercedes diesel engine rated at 423 horsepower. In addition, Atlas Copco is providing hats and t-shirts for this year’s Punkin Chunkin World Championship at no cost.
Atlas Copco’s Compressor Technique business area develops, manufactures, markets, and services oil-free and oil-injected stationary air compressors, portable air compressors, gas and process compressors, turbo expanders, electric power generators, air treatment equipment and air management systems. It also offers specialty rental services. It innovates for superior productivity in applications such as manufacturing, construction, and the process industry worldwide.
